After three years as a mechanic for Harley-Davidson’s factory dirt rack team, Steve Storz started a company to supply tuning services and parts for AMA racers trying to win on Harley’s legendary XR750.
He succeeded by creating precise high-performance parts that held up in demanding situations: “Racing does not tolerate the imprecise nor does it reward those who place style before function. The work ethic of racing is woven into everything we produce here at Storz Performance. It’s not enough for a part to look good, it must also work well.”
25 years into Storz Performance, the company created a XR-style conversion kit for the 2004+ Sportster with the rubber mounted engine. In addition to the cosmetic upgrades, the finished product shaved an impressive 83 pounds off the original dry weight of 557 pounds.
The comprehensive kit includes a hand-formed alloy gas tank, fiberglass seat with Saddlemen pad, chrome Storz XR-style high exhaust with BUB chrome heat shields, 18″ alloy rims with Buchanan stainless spokes, Metzeler tires, Storz rearset footpeg kit, Galfer wave rotors on special Storz floating centers, Flanders cafe bars, Performance Machine brake calipers, chain drive conversion, Dakota digital gauges, and Storz/Ceriani 55mm inverted forks. Each part of the kit can be ordered individually, and many of them are on this stylish example.
A SuperTrapp flat track style exhaust was also available as long as you promised to use it for closed course competition only. We won’t tell.
This example is VIN: 1HD4CJM356K402885. The seller purchased the bike from a private party through an Iconic auction May 2022
During his ownership the seller has covered approximately 600 miles. The odometer shows 4,933 miles.
Maintenance:
The seller states, “I changed the oil for the engine and primary and installed new tires. Fixed the rear brake light with the front brake. It could use a new chain.”
Modifications:
The May 2022 auction had a previous owner note, “I am a former owner of this bike. I can confirm it started life as an 883 and has had the 1200 cylinder conversion with the 883 heads. It also has a FCR42 carb which is jetted perfectly for lower altitudes and as you can see, the SuperTrapp which sounds better in person than in the video. I purchased the bike from Iconic and subsequently met the builder. It has had the fork conversation done since it was last listed on Iconic.”
Per the current owner, “I changed out the exhaust cone to an open exhaust.”
When the bike was built, it was stripped to the frame and powdercoated, and the swingarm, cases, and headlight bucket were color-matched.
