At the turn of the millennium, the MV Agusta brand was revived with the release of a new flagship, the 750cc F4. Penned by the great Massimo Tamburini, the F4 boasted a ground-breaking design that redefined the modern superbike. In the years that followed, the F4 underwent a series of revisions and model updates, though the bike’s incredible aesthetics went largely unchanged.

Underneath the proverbial hood, however, progress was constant. What started out as a three-quarter-liter engine was replaced with an increasingly potent liquid-cooled, 998cc, four-stroke, 16-valve, DOHC radial valve, four-cylinder mill, and in August of 2006, an F4 1000 R achieved the title of world’s fastest 1,000cc production motorcycle when it clocked a speed of 185.882 mph on the dried bed of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Successor to the F4 1000 S, the 1000 R not only featured a 174hp motor, but also utilized a reworked chrome-molybdenum steel tube chassis and top-of-the-line running gear including 50mm upside-down carbon-nitride coated Marzocchi forks, Sachs mono-shock, and radial-mount monoblocs and forged aluminum rims from Brembo. For more on what it’s like to ride the F4 1000 R, check out this First Ride review from Motorcyclist magazine about the 2007 model.
