By 2008 the Monster platform was already 15 years old and in desperate need of an upgrade. First came the 696 and the release was resounding success as it became the first Ducati bike to sell over 10,000 units in one year. Six months later we got it’s bigger brother when Ducati released the 1100.
Although sharing many styling similarities as the 696, such as the instrument panel and the trellis frame derived from the Desmosedici, the 1100 got bigger tires, an aluminium single sided swingarm, and of course the bigger engine. The 1078cc mill was the same engine architecture as the Hypermotard and Multistrada putting out a claimed 95 bhp and 79.5 ft-lbs of torque. Where the engine differed, however, was in the crankcases which were close to seven pounds lighter from utilizing Vacural casting technology. In fact, Ducati claims the whole bike weighs only 373lbs dry and when paired with the mills power makes the machine capable of fun sweeping canyon rides or aggressive highway overtakes.
Motorcycle.com has this to say in their review, “And for those who might believe 95 crankshaft horsepower is unacceptable for a liter-size sportbike, you owe it to yourself to grab a handful of this Monster. Brawny power is produced from as low as 3000 revs, and second-gear throttle wheelies prove to be endlessly entertaining. Just as important to a rider is feedback from Ducati’s V-Twin: rumbly and cool.”
This example is VIN: ZDM1RACP79B018123. It was originally built by Arrick Maurice for the 2011 Monster Challenge. It comes to Iconic from the collection of Mark Sheppard.
The odometer shows 4,314 miles.
