Aprilia first introduced the RS4 in 2011 as the successor to its wildly popular RS125 (ironically, it would later be replaced by the RS125 in 2016). One of the biggest changes came in the form of the powerplant. Where the 125 before it had utilized a revvy, oil-burning two-stroke block, the RS4 instead featured a DOHC four-valve four-stroke.
Though this resulted in less grunt (the RS125 could be tuned to as much as 33hp, whereas the RS4 topped out around 25hp), the switch made for a markedly more reliable bike. Not only that, but this also meant that the RS4 offered improved mid-range power and fuel economy.
Dry weight came in slightly heavier at 295 pounds (up from 280) and, while it might seem tiny, the ergonomics are surprisingly comfortable for bigger riders, too.
Per this review from MCN: “Despite making only 15bhp it’s great fun to ride – the fact the new four-stroke engine thrives on revs keeps the old RS spirit alive. It handles well, stops well, and most importantly looks the part. What more could a 17-year-old want?”
