Kawasaki introduced the Ninja ZX-10R in 2004 and it was instantly successful – it immediately won Masterbike as well as Cycle World’s Best Superbike award. As Bennett’s summed it up, “wild, often unpredictable and packing a serious punch, the Ninja was a trademark Kawasaki sportsbike that split opinions. Some loved its outrageously aggressive character, others were downright scared of it!”
Fast forward to 2015 – Kawasaki had just won 2 out of the last three WSBK championships, but a new rule change involving crankshaft weights was giving one of their riders (specifically Tom Sykes) some trouble. That sparked a series of changes which resulted in a machine that Jonathan Rea would take the next five straight WSBK championships with. Highlights of the changes included a lighter crankshaft, revised combustion chamber shape, larger exhaust valves, new pistons, larger airbox, and increased overlap in the cams. The happy result of all that was a bump in power up to 197 hp (207 with ram air).
Those drivetrain changes were complemented by new Brembo radial calipers, an updated Showa Balance Free Fork, and an IMU to power the advanced electronics package which included cornering ABS.
