Over the last two decades, the sportbike category has become something of a performance arms race, as manufacturers across the board are ever in the pursuit of being the biggest, fastest, and most powerful of the bunch. Despite the resulting bikes being fun on the track, though, they make everyday ownership anything but easy.

In response to the recent shift away from beefy 600cc fours, Aprilia released the RS660, a middleweight model intended to invoke the spirit of a race replica in a far more approachable package.

Between the angular fairing and cast aluminum frame, it’s strikingly reminiscent of Aprilia’s road-going RSV4 and competition-level RS-GP. Underneath the proverbial hood, however, it features a 659cc parallel twin that’s good for 100hp at 10,500rpm, 49lb-ft of torque at 8,500rpm, and an 11,500rpm redline. In practice, this makes the platform just as capable splitting lanes as it is carving corners through the canyons. As Motorcycle News put it in their review: “Power is usable, the riding position is comfortable and it’s the perfect to step up the sportsbike ladder for newer riders, not to mention for the rest of us who still want the thrill of a sportsbike without the aches and pains.”

And that’s not all; Aprilia also loaded the RS660 with tons of rider-friendly tech, such as cornering ABS, cruise control, wheelie control, three various ride modes, and even engine braking control. Add to that a bi-directional quickshifter, a set of four-pot Brembos up front (with a two piston caliper at the rear), as well as a fully adjustable suspension setup, and you’re left with a bike that “delivers a lovely balance of performance and handling that makes it fun.”
