Dirt Bike Magazine’s first issue was in June 1971, and their feature story was a comparison between some of the best 250cc MX bikes of the day: the offerings from Husqvarana, Maico, and CZ.

The CZ’s 246cc 2-stroke single was good for 28 horsepower, and it was paired with a 4-speed transmission. Wet weight was 242 pounds.

This example is VIN: 980.4.001101. The seller acquired it as a partial trade towards an older Triumph roughly four months ago.

There is no odometer, true mileage is unknown. The seller has only ridden it “in and around the parking lot, up and down the block. Nothing serious.”

“This bike is something of a transition model for CZ. The earlier side pipe model had the big chrome muffler up one side. These yellow tank models came out in 1971, then in 73 they went to the coffin tank. The center pipe model came out in 1974. This appears to be an early 71 model..”
Maintenance:
“I have done nothing to it. It is exactly as it was traded.”
Modifications:
“To the best of my knowledge, this would have had a metal tank with the black tank panel, steel fenders and painted steel or aluminum number plates. The plastic tank, fenders and plates are either aftermarket or from a later model and painted yellow. I think the PAL shocks are original, also the handlebars, clutch and brake levers. This shift lever is not original. The carburetor is original Jikov. The tires are either original or period Barum. They are aged out but hold air for display purposes. The spark plug caps are not original. The brittle seat cover is original. Its numbers matching,- 001101 engine and frame. The bike starts easy – at least for me and sounds quite strong. The pipe is not perfect but quite good, actually very good for an original low pipe. The clutch plates stick a little at first, until the bike warms up.”
It is riding on Barum tires that have aged out.
