Description
Introduced in 1993, the Yamaha YZF750R spent its time in the shadow of the Honda CBR900RR and the Ducati 916, however “it was the best everyday 750cc sportsbike of the 1990s“ as well as Sport Rider Magazine’s 1995 Bike of the Year.
Yamaha had already gone with the racebike-for-the-road route with the recent OW-01, so this follow-up 750 was a road bike first – racers had the option of a homologation version dubbed the SP. It doesn’t matter if the tank says Honda, Yamaha, or any other manufacturer – if the model name ends in SP (Sport Production), you’ve probably got something special. That’s definitely the case with the YZF750SP, a homologation special variant of Yamaha’s YZF750R.
The R model was good enough to be crowned Bike of the Year by Sport Rider in 1995, but the SP was extra special thanks to an adjustable swingarm pivot, fully adjustable suspension front and rear, 39mm Keihin FCR flatslide carbs, removable rear subframe, and a monoposto, as Ducati would call it.
There were also hidden changes, such as revised cams and different gear ratios: the SP could top 85 mph in first gear! Both were ideal for superbike and endurance racing – the YZF won the Suzuka 8 Hours four different times between 1987 and 1996 and it won the British Superbike Championship three years in a row. Yamaha produced just 500 examples of the SP in 1993 for homologation purposes – we’ve heard that just 7 were officially exported to the US.
Basic specifications were 125 horsepower at 13,000 rpm through a 6-speed close-ratio transmission, good for a top speed of 168 miles per hour. Wet weight was 494 pounds, and everything was kept together with Yamaha’s Deltabox twin-spar aluminum frame.
This example was frame swapped and has no VIN stamp on the aftermarket frame. The seller states “This is a race bike that I purchased from Ben Pilon when he was crewing for Pascal Picotte. I have never raced it. This is an SP model so it has the adjustable swingarm pivot and removeable rear subframe etc.”
This is a racebike and as such there is no odometer. The true mileage is unknown. The seller has not ridden the bike in his 15+ years of ownership. He states “I purchased directly from Ben and was going to get into AHRMA but career got in the way etc. It has been in my collection for a long time and as an SP it is very rare in the states. It has many cool race upgrades like the suspension and some attack parts etc.”
