Back in 1992, Shinya Kimura founded Zero Engineering in Japan, quickly gaining recognition for his characteristically vintage-yet-minimalist bikes. In fact, many enthusiasts consider him be the creator of the “zero style” — an aesthetic that comprises a rigid “gooseneck” frame, a pre-1984 Harley-Davidson engine, a springer front end, a set of spoked wheels, and no shortage of beautifully machined components.
Over the subsequent decades, Shinya moved on, and Zero established a US subsidiary in Las Vegas. Each bike’s frame and forks come from Japan and are shipped to the company’s U.S. headquarters where final assembly takes place with domestic-built engines and transmissions.
The Type 9 first shipped in 2011 and came with either an 80-96 cubic inch S&S Evo or a 93 cubic inch S&S Shovelhead. Regardless of your choice of engine, the bike tipped the scales at 573lbs dry and utilized a combination of Harley and Wilwood brakes, a 2.6 gallon fuel tank, an exposed belt drive, and a new multi-link suspension setup which Zero had upgraded from the rigid frame found on the Types 5, 7, and 8. The Evo had an electric starter and a Baker 5-speed transmission whereas the Shovel featured both electric and kick starters and a Baker 6-speed. In the words of Zero Engineering, all of this gave the Type 9, “Autobahn quality obtained after two extremely intense years of work.”
