In 1986, Suzuki set the new standard in the sport bike class with the release of the first GSX-R750. 35 years later the GSX-R750 is not only still in production, it is the only 750 supersport being sold new today, adding to its storied history as one of the most successful motorcycles of all time. The formula was simple: a larger and more powerful 750 cc engine shoehorned into a 600 cc class chassis offering light weight and excellent handling. Ten years after its introduction, time and the competition from other brands had caught up with Suzuki and the bike was due for a major refresh. So, for the 1996 GSX-R750, Suzuki heavily revamped the model, delivering a host of features – many of which were derived from the firm’s factory race bikes.

The most compact and lightweight inline-four in its class, the redesigned engine was able to shirk a good deal of weight via the use of new magnesium cylinder head, starter motor, and clutch covers. On top of the new engine and frame, the ’96 GSX-R also got all-new wind-tunnel-developed bodywork inspired by Kevin Schwantz’s RG500 GP mount.

The seller purchased the bike four and a half years ago from an estate sale. He is selling to downsize his collection. During his ownership the seller has covered approximately 17 miles. The odometer shows 1,047 miles.

Third up for Iconic Motorbikes today: in its past life as a pit bike, this Zuma 50 accumulated signatures from over 25 AMA legends! This iconic Yamaha's from 2003 and it's available for bid now on iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

Yamaha originally debuted the Zuma back in 1989 with the CW50 generation. For the engine, the Tuning Fork company opted for a vertical two-stroke single produced by Minarelli. Measuring 49cc in displacement, it was good for some 1.9hp from the factory. However, thanks to the parts support and tuning potential, it quickly proved popular amongst the aftermarket scooter performance crowd.

In 2002, Yamaha released an updated version of the Zuma under the YW50 generation. Affectionately known as the “bug-eye” Zuma, it marked the first time that the model was available stateside. Boasting a new horizontal Minarelli engine, it also benefitted from helpful creature comforts like increased storage space, a rear cargo rack, and a full instrument panel.

Manufactured in September 2002, this example is VIN: LPRSA20A93A201009. The seller states that he acquired the scooter in 2016 from “Bob Treat who raced vintage AMA. He used it as a pit bike and had many famous racers around the world sign it at different tracks. There are 25+ signatures, 95% of them are all in the AMA Hall of fame, including Gene Romero , Gary Nixon, Al Knapp, Jeff Smith, Larry Poons, Don Emde, Kevin Schwantz, Cook Nielson, Dick Klamfoth, Jay Springsteen, Dave Aldana, Michelle Duff, Craig Vetter, Larry Pegram, Ed Fisher, Thad Wolfe, Reno Leonis, Dave Roper, Doug Polen, Brian Slark, George Barber, Bill Warner, Ronnie Rall, Mitch Boehm, Al Charles, Don Rickman, Jerry Wood, and John Penton.” The odometer shows 3,856 miles.

Following the success of Ducati’s V-Twin-powered racers in the World Superbike Championship, other major manufacturers followed suit by developing their own race-bred V-Twins. Suzuki’s first attempt at a performance-driven V-Twin model came in the form of the TL1000S in 1997, though the next year the Japanese marque would follow up the half-faired 1000S with the even racier TL1000R. “The concept behind the TL1000R is simple: Build a V-Twin with the potential to win Superbike races”, explained Hiroshi Moritake who led the TL-R project.

While the 1000S and 1000R models both shared the same engine, the R-spec was far more than just a full-faired version of its predecessor. The 1000R featured a beefy aluminum twin-spar frame based on the GSX-R750. Weighing around 430 lbs dry, the TL1000R sported wind-tunnel-developed bodywork including a distinctive “shark nose” fairing, which helped the 135 hp V-Twin cut through the air and reach speeds of up to 170 mph. Suzuki also offered a myriad of trick factory race kit parts for the TLR, including upgraded internals, and a wide array of chassis adjustability such as swing-arm pivot position, ride height, and steering stem rake.

The seller purchased the bike Summer 2023 from a private party through an Iconic auction. During his ownership the seller has covered approximately 25 miles. The odometer shows 21,367 kilometers (13,276) miles.

Maintenance:
The seller states, “This is a Japanese bike. It was serviced by Iconic before purchasing it. New tires, coolant flush, hydraulic fluids and chain replaced.”

Nicky Hayden was a Tissot ambassador, and the Swiss luxury watchmaker celebrated that fact with annual releases of Limited Edition watches inspired by Nicky and his MotoGP career – they had similar arrangements at the time with Danica Patrick and Michael Owen.

2007 was a special year, as the watch came out right after Nicky’s 2006 MotoGP World Championship.

Here’s what Tissot had to say in their Certificate of Authenticity: “In a world where precision and timing are key, Nicky Hayden, the 2006 MotoGP World Champion, certainly knows the importance of counting every second. no surprise therefore that, as Tissot’s ambassador, a dedicated World Champion signature watch should be created for him, with a carbon-fibre dial and bearing his new 2007 race number “ONE” engraved on the case-back with his signature.”

Abhi and I took a quick field trip over to Victor’s @victor_moto new MV Agusta Flagship store @mvagusta.losangeles as Abhi couldn’t make the grand opening. I was there but it was so busy that it was hard to really see the place or the bikes. Have to applaud the turnout, it was a great event.

It’s only 2.2 miles away from our Iconic HQ and most certainly worth a visit. The store / dealership came out quite beautiful and it’s full of exotic MV’s.

I got to check out the LXP Orioli in person and the Lucky Strike / Kevin Schwantz inspired livery sure made me smile. Tough call between this and the DesertX but the livery wins me over..

My phone doesn’t do the Assen edition justice but that dark…yet bright blue and the blue carbon wheels sure catches your eye.

Such a high end looking location with the smell of high grade leather, deep shine from the MV’s and quite a bit of MV Merch. I now understand why it’s called a flagship store as it’s really impressive.

I know the F3 hasn’t changed much but that bike sure appeals to me. Really hope they come out with a new MV F4. If they had one in that same Assen style livery, it would be hard to resist.

Closing 7th for our auction site Friday is a track-ready Yamaha twin that comes with upgrades galore: an M4 exhaust, a Dynojet quick shifter, and some K-tech suspension! This R3 track bike is from 2021 and it's available for bid until 4PM PST on Iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

In 2015, Yamaha decided to challenge the small bike establishment with their release of the R3, and the end result was impressive. Sport Rider opened up their review by simply saying it was “worth the wait.” Thanks to a 321cc motor it was faster than the competition from Honda and Kawasaki and it quickly became Yamaha’s best selling motorcycle in the US. It also became a popular platform for ~300 cc racing.

Basic specs for the R3 were 41 horsepower, 22lb-ft of torque, and a curb weight of just 373 pounds. Stopping power for the little twin came from a 298mm disc up front and a 220mm disc at the rear, paired with two-pot and single-pot calipers, respectively. In order to provide confident handling through turns, Yamaha fitted the R3 with a set of 41mm KYB forks along with an adjustable KYB shock.

The model was updated in 2019 with new bodywork, significantly improved suspension, and upgraded tires to make it a very impressive baby sportbike.

The seller states it was turned into a race bike October 2021 before his ownership and is selling to clear space. He purchased the bike with the intention of using it on the track, however, his plans have since changed and he never had the opportunity to race it.

Sixth to close up on the site for Iconic Friday: an imported CB400F that sports a slick set of waterfall pipes! This iconic Honda's from 1975 and it's available for bid until 3PM PST on Iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

The CB400F wasn’t as fast as its competition, but it was smoother, quieter, and more efficient. It also had some of the most beautiful production exhaust headers ever built, which are known by some as the “waterfall pipes” and are so iconic that Honda brought them back for the new CB650F!

Featuring a relatively rare-for-the-time six-speed transmission, the CB400F was styled somewhat like a cafe racer and had an engine that produced 37 horsepower. Weighing just over 400 pounds, a rider could knock off the quarter mile in about 14.1 seconds. It’s a basic, classic bike that would be just fine serving as a lovely daily rider. This example came to Iconic as an import from the U.K. The odometer shows 24,351 kilometers (15,131 miles).

The seller states that the previous owner performed a full engine overhaul. He’s included documentation from the rebuild.

A mainstay in Suzuki’s small-displacement trail bike lineup, the DR200S is a model with lineage dating all the way back to 1986. And here’s the thing — the package was so solid upon its introduction that it’s remained mostly unchanged since that time. Considering the bike’s svelte 278-pound wet weight, the output offered more than enough grunt to get you through traffic around town or over obstacles on the trail.

Elsewhere, Suzuki gave the bike a dirt-appropriate wheel setup with a 21-inch unit in the front and an 18-inch unit out back. Suspension consisted of a pair of telescopic forks and a rear monoshock, with travel coming to 8.1 inches fore and aft.

The seller acquired the bike from Del Amo Motorsports approximately seven years ago. The odometer shows 3,097 miles.

Maintenance:

Iconic's third auction set to wrap up on our site Friday begs the question: what would you have planned for it? This NSR250R SE MC28 project bike is from 1994 and it's available for bid until 12PM PST on Iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

In 1991, Honda split the base and SP models of the NSR250R with the introduction of the SE (Super Edition) model. They had all of the SP goodies (dry clutch, adjustable suspension, special livery) except for the magnesium wheels.

Come 1994, the Japanese firm updated the NSR with an all new model dubbed the MC28. The result was arguably the ultimate 250cc street bike in Japan thanks in no small part to the PGM-IV ignition and Pro-Arm single sided swingarm. Also notable was the memory card used to start the bike.

This example came to Iconic as an import from Japan. The odometer shows 15,188 kilometers (9,437 miles).

Replacing the ‘S’ model, the ‘SF’ was released in 1970 with SF standing for Super Freni or Super Brakes. Designed by Fransisco Laverda himself, it was an answer to criticism of the Grimeca brakes on the S and GT predecessors. The result was one of the best vertical twins ever built. It was oil-tight, with a twin-carb, electric start, a five-speed gearbox, and an excellent combination of speed, power and style. It went on to become Laverda’s most successful model with over 18,000 units sold.

The top right translates: Confirming its exceptional grip and speed. Wins.

The poster comes framed and affixed with hanging wire. It measures 42″ long by 26.5″ high. The frame bears a sticker from KC Arts.

Going live 5th today: a one-owner, low-mile RSV Mille that sports an upgraded Aprilia Racing exhaust! This one's from 2000 and it's availabl for bid now with NO RESERVE on iconicmotorbikeauctions.com

First released in 1999, the RSV Mille marked Aprilia’s first foray into the big-bore superbike market. The model was well-received, touted for being exotic yet still more affordable than Ducati’s 996, while offering reliability more on par with V-Twins like Honda’s RC51 or Suzuki’s TL1000R.

Drawing from experience born out of the Italian firm’s race program — specifically its 250 GP machines — Aprilia bestowed the V-Twin literbike with an array of trick competition-derived features like its box-section aluminum-alloy twin-spar frame and double banana swingarm.

Powering the Mille was a liquid-cooled, 997cc, four-stroke, 60-degree, longitudinal, V-Twin with double overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, and electronic fuel injection. Produced by Austrian engine outfit, Rotax, the Mille’s mill made a claimed 130 hp at 9,500 rpm and 74 ft-lbs of torque at 5,500 rpm. The motor was also markedly more reliable than that of Aprilia’s Italian competitors. To lessen the 60-degree twin’s proclivity for immense vibration — especially when nearing its 170+ mph top speed — the RSV’s engine utilized an Anti-Vibration Double Countershaft system.

Manufactured September 1999, this example came to Iconic from the original owner; he purchased the bike new from an Aprilia dealer in Sanford, Florida.

In this case, I didn’t want to risk employee safety or asking them to do anything illegal so I ENTHUSIASTICALLY volunteered for the test ride.

It’s one thing to look at and display these special bikes but “in NO reality” did I ever expect I’d get the shot at riding these special racebikes.

Not the best commuter bike as it steers like a semi truck under low speed but when she goes…SHE GOES!

It’s time for iconic to add another division (or two) and that means it’s time to sell some of our prized race bikes. This beauty will hit out auction site soon at NO RESERVE. I pray it goes to a good home and I get visitation rights 🙂
