Byron began working at Fay Myers, Denver’s local motorcycle dealer, at age 14. He started by sweeping the floors in the repair shop when Fay invited him gruffly to “grab a broom.” It was the mid-1960’s. Fay not only owned the shop, he raced a dragbike!
By the time Byron was 16, he had mastered how to repair and assemble motorcycles, Hondas and Triumphs specifically. The day Fay asked him to become a shop rider on the drag bike was the beginning of a long and magical time for the skinny 16 year old. He won against men, Harley’s, and anything else that met him on the dragstrip.
Time passed. His career as a firefighter allowed him to pursue his passion, racing, riding, and creating motorcycles out of sheer parts. His love for 1960’s bikes never faded. By the 1990’s Byron’s respect and love for what were now the classics (305 Dreams, Superhawks, CB160’s, etc.) guided him to restore and collect the bikes of his teenage years.
Having drag-raced and street-raced as a kid, his competitive nature was fueled again as an adult when Byron learned about AHRMA. He built three 160’s racers from scattered parts and world-wide searches. The bikes, with Byron as the rider, won two national titles in 1993: 200 GP and 250 GP. He traveled around the United States racing and was competitive beyond his wildest dreams.
Byron worked on his motorcycles daily, preferring his classics over his modern bikes. Riding vintage bikes was something we did as a couple and this was passed down to our children. His obsession became a family obsession. Byron passed on September 8th, 2026.
